Lagos State Government Demolishes Allen Roundabout, Relocates Fela, Awolowo Statues
The Lagos State Government has commenced the rebuilding and the removal of Allen Avenue roundabout in Ikeja, Lagos capital city. The removal is part of the effort of the administration to get rid of traffic-gridlock in the state.
The roundabout is well known to have the statue of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, which was erected by the former Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode. The statue had to be pulled down as it had part of a way to the roundabouts.
According to a government source, Gov Sanwo-Olu embarked on this project in order to profer solution to traffic issues usually experienced on the road. The roundabout which is in the heart of IKEJA navigates and connects exits and entries of Ikeja hence, the traffic concentration is very high.
In a bid to resolve the traffic challenges the government began demolishment and reconstruction that will ease the congestion in this area.
The statues of Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the musical icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti will be moved to another suitable place after the project is completed.
It will be recalled that the Sanwo-Olu administration has also begun the removal of the 2nd Lekki Roundabout. The governor stated that the roundabout demolition was part of the effort to ensure free vehicular movements along Lekki corridors of which the Lekki road was known for.
Also, the Lagos State government targets to work on four major roundabouts that compound traffic-jam in the state. The areas identified are Ikotun, Maryland and Allen Avenue roundabouts.
