An exclusive update into the 2nd Niger Bridge being constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC in Onitsha.
Many have been asking about the Second Niger Bridge as to when the bridge will finally be commissioned. The bridge which has been a point of discussion among the Eastern residents in Nigeria has been undergoing serious construction, in fact, according to one of the workers working on this site, he said, they hardly have rest because the managers made it known to them that they have to deliver on time.
The Second Niger bridge is being built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and so far, according to their January Report, work on this bridge has reached 45% completion rate.
For example, the following are said to be ongoing at the site as we speak…
- Reinforcement and shuttering for pour step 3
- Dredging of sand into the embankment
- Incremental launching: Segments 1 to 3 cast and successfully launched
- Bridge Foundation up to Bridge Substructure works completed
- Pile installation by piling Subcontractor (Trevi)
- Placing of lateral guides, final and temporary plinths for launching bearings
- Amakom Bridge – Placing of precast beams and slab and dredging of sand into embankment CH 23+000 to 24+800 commencement
- Onitsha side being sand-filled for road works, among others
The Second Niger Bridge is a key national infrastructure, with immense socio-economic benefits for the contiguous states and indeed the entire nation.
Upon completion, the bridge will ease traffic flow, improve road safety, and create greater opportunities for local residents by advancing the commercial viability of the immediate area and regenerating economic life.
The scope of works includes the construction of 1.6 km long bridge, 10.3 km Highway, Owerri interchange and a toll station.
The construction is expected to be completed in 2021 as the completion date is set at 42 months.
