Australian City Uses Drainage Nets to Stop Waste from Polluting Waterways

The question is that, can this be replicated in Lagos? Lagos is a city known for its large population and the state government is struggling to keep up with dirt across the city. According to reports, Lagos disposes 13 metric ton of waste in a day, that is huge for any state government to bear.

The Australian city of Kwinana has designed a simple and cost-effective solution to deal with the discharge of waste from drainage systems. The town has put nets on the outlet of drainage pipes.

These nets stop waste and pollutants from leaving the sewers, preventing garbage transported by rain waters from contaminating the town’s local water reserve. It is a simple filtering system and it works like a charm.

🌱 In just six months, collected 370 Kg (815 lbs) of garbage from two locations.
🌱 Were installed on 750mm and 450mm-diameter concrete drainage pipe outlets.
🌱 The initiative only cost around $20,000, that’s about 7,620,000 naira.

The question is, can this work in Lagos? What are the plans of Lagos State Government on projects like this and in cutting expenses, reducing workload on LAWMA and also save some resources for the state coffers.

These are photos from the different drainage sites.
