The National Automotive Design & Development Council (NADDC) has emphasized the need for Nigeria and other West Africa Countries to be at par with the rest of the world in terms of fuel & emission standards.
The Director-General NADDC, Mr Jelani Aliyu MFR made this known at a workshop on Strategy for Adopting ECOWAS Standards on Fuel & Emission in Nigeria held at Ibeto hotel, Wednesday 17th February 2021.
Jelani in his address said “globally air pollution has become a source for serious concern, going by its efforts on human health and environment “
Adding that in Nigeria, air pollution is a major health risk and a growing economic burden in the country’s rapidly growing cities.
“In 2013 air pollution was the third leading risk factor for premature mortality in the country “ he stated.
The workshop according to him was therefore necessitated by the need for all stakeholders to meet with a view to agreeing on timely adoption of the new ECOWAS Emission Standards for fuel, gasoline and diesel for the benefit of the country.
Jelani therefore called for improved air quality to ensure lower economic cost for the health sector and increased competitiveness of cities.
In the same vein, the Hon. Minister, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment, Otunba Adeniyi CON ably represented by Mrs Mimi Abu said the workshop came at an auspicious moment when nations are working to reduce environmental pollution all over the world, adding that it is the duty of any responsible government to adhere to the climate change initiatives.
The Hon. Minister commended the NADDC for its efforts to ensure safer and cleaner energy in the auto industry, in line with global environmental practices citing the recently unveiled first assembled electric vehicle in Nigeria as a way to go.
He however called for synergy among stakeholders for successful adoption and urgent implementation of fuel and emission standards in Nigeria.
Other stakeholders at the workshop included the United Nations, Ministries of Petroleum, Environment, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Vehicle Inspectorate Office etc.
