The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally launched the GAC Car Assembly Plant in Lagos.

The Governor disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to him, the partnership between Lagos State and CIG Motors represented a pivotal step towards greater industrialization, more jobs, and technical training for the people of the state.

He said, “This partnership, born in the challenging days of the pandemic, has flourished, not only giving birth to the GAC Motor Nigeria CKD factory but also aiding the growth and expansion of our LAGRIDE project. These initiatives signify our commitment to progress, innovation, and the betterment of Lagos State.

“The opening of this vehicle assembly plant is a glowing emblem of our state’s openness to investments that foster job creation, skill development, wealth creation, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

“The ripple effect of this investment extends far beyond the automotive sector. It has ushered in a new dawn of employment, providing our industrious youths with well-deserved jobs, thereby significantly reducing unemployment in Lagos.”

The Lagos State Government and CIG Motors Company Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September 2020; while the Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) was executed in March 2021;

1. To establish the GAC Motor Nigeria CKD factory in Ogba
2. The LAGRIDE project – 1000 brand new GAC cars for smart taxis in Lagos.

This Assembly Plant sits on 35,000 square meters of landmass, including the production and quality inspection line workshops. The fully automated production workshop consists of 3 lines – The Trim line, The Chassis line and the Final line. The factory is built to GAC CKD factory standards and can match the current dismantled CKD assembly and forward assembly methods.

The Assembly workshop is designed in 3 phases to respond to market demands:

2. Medium production capacity of 20,000 units annually
3. Full-load production capacity of 50,000 units annually.

The factory produces 4 models of GAC cars – GA4, GS3, GS4 and GS8.

This is a successful public-private partnership between CIG Motors and the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
