VIO Seizes 50 Rickety Commercial Vehicles In Lagos
The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service conducted a comprehensive enforcement operation on Wednesday targeting unroadworthy vehicles across the state.
The operation, which resulted in the seizure of over 50 rickety commercial vehicles, focused on vehicles that failed to meet the prescribed minimum roadworthiness standards, especially with faulty brakes, wipers, lights, shocks and tyres, as stipulated in the State’s Transport Reform Law, 2018.
The deputy spokesperson for the agency, Bolanle Ogunlola, said during the enforcement exercise at Costain, Ikorodu Road, Ojuelegba, Yaba, Oyingbo, Ikeja, and Ojodu Berger, the Vehicle Inspection Officers also enlightened the drivers that non-compliance with safety standards could lead to accidents.
The Director, VIS, Akin-George Fashola, explained that roadworthiness compliance was no respecter of particular categories of vehicles, saying, “It is expected to be implemented on all vehicles that ply Lagos roads.”
He reiterated that the VIS would continue to uphold its commitment to conducting fair and unbiased enforcement drives, urging all vehicle owners and operators to prioritize regular maintenance and adherence to roadworthiness standards to ensure the safety of all road users.
Last year, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Biu, ordered an immediate clampdown on all old and rickety vehicles across the country.
The FRSC marshal said the directive became necessary due to a trending video of an old car with three worn-out tyres plying the highway in Sagamu, Ogun State.
