The Lagos State Government is taking drastic measures in making sure the residents obey the traffic rules and also obey all road and traffic instructions, one of the latest ways they are enforcing the rule is by making sure that no one jumps the highway again.
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has decided against pedestrians crossing the highway indiscriminately as the agency has stepped up its operation by arresting anyone who doesn’t use the bridge.
According to the LAGESC team, the development is to ensure free movements of vehicles in the state which has always been slowed down by pedestrian crossing major highways instead of using the bridges.
Commenting, the retired Commissioner of Police and Corps Marshal of the agency, Gbemisola Akinpelu said; “The agency is geared towards attaining total compliance on road crossing and use of pedestrian bridges in line with the mandate of the governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on the enforcement and prosecution of offenders.”
She also emphasized the risks associated with crossing the highways where pedestrian bridges were constructed, as this obstruct the free flow of traffic and unnecessary loss of lives as a result of a hit and run motorist.
Akinpelu, however, pointed out that the distance from the pedestrian bridges where an arrest could be made by LAGESC officers against pedestrians wishing to endanger their lives by crossing the highway had been pegged at 200 meters.
She laid emphasis on the fact that Lagos State Government was interested in making sure citizens do not endanger their lives by crossing the highways, even as she advised them to use pedestrian bridges, as she has charged the LAGESC operatives to intensify efforts at deterring defaulters.
