Work Resumes On The Second Niger Bridge After COVID-19 Break, See The New Look Of The Bridge

Work on the Second Niger Bridge has resumed aftermath the break caused by the pandemic, COVID-19 which forced all construction sites to be closed as ordered by the federal government of Nigeria.

Second Niger Bridge

The Second Niger Bridge is constructed and handled by Julius Berger Nig PLC.

The Second Niger bridge is a Nigerian Federal Government project that is 1.6 km (0.99 mi) long and furnished with other ancillary infrastructure including a 10.3 km (6.4 mi) highway, Owerri interchange and a toll station, expected to be completed in the year 2022. The bridge was initiated under the administration of Goodluck Jonathan and is being sustained by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The bridge is being constructed across Nigeria’s Niger River and it will span from Asaba to Ozubulu and Ogbaru areas.

The project is being developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) involving Julius Berger.

The Second Niger Bridge is a key national infrastructure, with immense socio-economic benefits for the contiguous states and indeed the entire nation.

Upon completion, the bridge will ease traffic flow, improve road safety, and create greater opportunities for local residents by advancing the commercial viability of the immediate area and regenerating economic life.

Niger Bridge At A Glance

The bridge is broken comprises of three parts namely:

West Approach – 755.25 Incremental Launched Bridge
East Approach – 205m Incremental Launched Bridge
Main Bridge – 630m Cantilever Bridge

The cities Asaba (Capital of Delta State) and Onitsha (Capital of Anambra State) are located in the South of Nigeria, Asaba on the West bank and Onitsha on the East bank of the River Niger. Both cities are located at a major East-West crossing point of the river, the Trans- African Highway between Lagos and Mombasa in Kenya.
