Ogun State Government Partners With NGTSL/Spiro To Roll Out Electric Bikes Across The State
With ongoing efforts to transition towards sustainable energy, the Ogun State Government, in partnership with NGTSL/Spiro, is taking decisive action to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) bikes and introduce electric bikes.
To kickstart this initiative, the state government conducted test drives in Abeokuta, specifically on rough terrain, to ensure the suitability and adaptability of electric bikes. In addition, the state engaged in a comprehensive sensitization campaign with key stakeholders in the transport sector, including transport unions, commercial riders, and the Ministry of Transport.
To facilitate the smooth implementation of this project, 13 swap stations for the pilot areas were identified. The goal is to deploy 250 swap stations across the state within a six-month timeframe. These swap stations will enable convenient battery exchanges for electric bikes, ensuring uninterrupted mobility for riders.
The Spiro commando bikes, which will be utilized in this transition, offer an impressive range of 70–80 kilometers per battery swap. Furthermore, by switching to electric bikes, we anticipate a significant 30–40% reduction in operational expenses compared to traditional ICE bikes.
Additionally, electric bikes are not only environmentally friendly but also produce minimal noise pollution, making them a preferable choice for our communities.
According to the state government. Gov Dapo Abiodun said, “We are excited about the multitude of benefits that electric bikes bring to our state, including improved sustainability, cost savings, and a healthier environment. This initiative marks a progressive step towards a greener future for Ogun State.”
