After several months of being closed, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja comes alive as Ethiopian Airlines commence flight operations on Monday, 7th Sept.

Abuja Airport Reopens

Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350-900 became the first plane to land on the runway. The plane landed at the airport at about 12:10 p.m, the plane was welcomed with the traditional water salute to mark the arrival of the first airline to arrive at the airport after 6 months of closure.

Local Nigerian airlines, including Medview and Air Peace, have indicated their decision to start flying the Abuja route from Wednesday.

The closure of the airport enabled the authorities to upgrade some facilities, especially in the main domestic departure terminals.

One noticeable thing is the struct compliance to the COVID-19 guideline and protocols as mandated by the health ministry, these include wearing of face masks by both travellers by Nigerians and foreign nationals, as well as social distancing by persons on queues.

Similarly, incoming flights were disinfected shortly after their arrival at the airport and before passengers disembarked from the aircraft.

The Federal Government had fixed Saturday last week for the resumption of international flights at the airport in Abuja and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

However, the government set out strict measures for passengers and airlines willing to come into the country, such as passengers presenting a negative COVID-19 test result conducted not more than four days before departure and taking the test again on arrival.
