Nigeria has come a long way when it comes to regulation of roads, drivers and driver licenses in the country. One of the prerequisites for any driver in Nigeria is the driver’s license. What many do not know is that this started as far as 1966.

Nigeria Police Inspecting Drivers License

According to a video obtained by AutoReportNG courtesy of Reuters News Archive, it shows when the campaign and clampdown on drivers license kicked off.

The footage shows the police in the then Nigerian capital city of Lagos while in the middle of a two-week campaign geared towards catching unlicensed drivers and vehicles.

The operation yielded dividends within 3 days as 34,000 vehicles and drivers licenses were renewed, boosting the coffers of Lagos City Council by £46,000 (British Pounds).

Morning traffic was light and reduced drastically due to culprits leaving their cars at home. This put a strain on public transport in the city.

It was in 1988 that the Federal Road Safety Corps was established officially in Nigeria. FRSC is the Government Agency with statutory responsibilities for road safety administration in Nigeria.

Licences Office In Lagos Checked by Police...

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) operates in all Nigerian states as well as the Federal Capital Territory and is the leading agency in Nigeria on road safety administration and management. The statutory functions include: Making the highways safe for motorists and other road users as well as checking road worthiness of vehicles, recommending works and infrastructures to eliminate or minimize accidents on the highways and educating motorists and members of the public on the importance of road discipline on the highways.

Prior to the establishment of the Federal Road Safety Commission in 1988, there was no concrete and sustained policy action to address the carnage on Nigerian roads. Earlier attempts in this direction were limited to discrete and isolated attempts by some states of the federation and individuals.
