Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike is one governor that many love to hate. He doesn’t hide his feeling that he is the no-nonsense type of governor who is a strict disciplinary who takes the interest of his people at heart.
In order to enforce strict compliance to the lockdown order of the state, Governor Wike who has been going round to see the compliance rate himself arrests 14 persons who are hidden in trailer conveying cows from Adamawa State. The persons arrested will be tested for coronavirus and prosecuted while the cows and trailer would be auctioned according to the governor.
They were arrested at Rumuigbo in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Governor Wike ordered the prosecution of the 14 persons by the Mobile Court constituted by the administration under the Executive Order 6 signed for the declaration of the lockdown.
He also directed the State Ministry of Health to conduct tests on the 14 persons to ascertain their coronavirus status.
He said: “This fight has nothing to do with individuals. The law must take its course. You are aware of what is happening and then some people want to illegally smuggle persons into the state.
Governor Nyesom Wike has practically taken over command on the streets of Port Harcourt enforcing the extreme lockdown he ordered on Monday, May 4, 2020, on the state capital, and sending the defaulters to quarantine, seen as prison.
The governor has barked at the deputy commissioner of police in the state, Adamu Abubakar, saying there can be no two governors in the state. “I am the governor”, Wike declared.
“For the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) to sabotage us, that will not be accepted. I arrested those people and he had the guts to tell them to release those I arrested on the road. That is unacceptable.”
Governor Wike insisted that the impounded vehicles would be auctioned. “The defaulters will be tried by the mobile courts and I have told the Attorney General, all the impounded vehicles must be auctioned. By tomorrow, the Honourable Attorney General would have advertised those vehicles and we will auction them.
