Recently, we have been seeing lots of pictures on the social media claiming to emanate from the Enugu International Airport, Enugu, while it’s difficult getting the real pictures from this place due to that to the fact that all airports in the country are currently shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one can not easily access it due to the security put in place.
The minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika on Monday tweeted some images from the Enugu Airport runway which is undergoing construction, according to the minister, he said, “We announce our full remobilization to Enugu despite COVID lockdown. Even with challenges like heavy rains, opening up of quarries and bitumen sources we should complete this procurement in a few weeks. A definite date of completion will be announced at my next site visit.”
A close look shows that the airport is undergoing a reconstruction of 08/26 runway with a section of turn pad end of approach 08, using the rigid pavement.
It will be recalled that FAAN had on August 24 announced the closure of the airport, which is the only international airport in the Southeast region, for the reconstruction of the runway —with the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika promising works would be completed by December 2020. The airport was closed due to safety concerns regarding its operations and the state of the runway for scheduled for repairs.
