The Lagos State Government has announced a reduction in ferry fares to celebrate Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary.
The reduction to 60 per cent of the usual rates will take effect from September 30 to October 3.
The Managing Director of the Lagos Ferry Services, Abdoulbaq Balogun, urged residents to participate in the boat cruising regatta organised to conclude the celebrations.
Balogun spoke on Monday during a briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
According to him, the government targets 458,000 passengers daily to ease pressure on-road transportation.
He said, “The state government, in appreciating the commuting public for embracing water transportation as a reliable alternative means of decongesting the road, has decided, in celebration of Nigeria’s 60th independence, to reduce prices on all boat trips from all routes within the state to 60 per cent, while on-board passengers will win numerous prizes and tickets to the boat cruise via raffle draws.
“As Nigerians, we have every cause to celebrate our diversity and unity every October 1st and Lagos, being the centre of excellence with the largest concentration of all ethnic groups in the country, has a pivotal role to play to sustain that unity.
“This is why we are specially celebrating our independence to showcase our history, culture and heritage.”
