Henley Passport Index has ranked Nigeria passport 101st behind other African countries and on the world scale.
Henley and Partners explained that the index was based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association.
The Henley Passport Index (HPI) is a global ranking of countries according to the travel freedom of holders of their ordinary – as opposed to diplomatic – passport holders. It started in 2006 as Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index (HVRI) and was modified and renamed in January 2018.
The site provides a ranking for 199 passports of the world according to the number of countries their holders can travel to visa-free.
The ranking shows Japan ranked at number one followed by Singapore, then South Korea and Germany at third position. Italy, Finland, Spain, and Luxembourg settled for the fourth position, while Denmark and Austria are listed in the top 5.
African countries that are ranked above Nigeria are Zimbabwe (83rd), Ghana and Morocco (84th), Sierra Leone and Mozambique (85th), Benin (86th), São Tomé and Príncipe and Rwanda (87th), Mauritania (88th), Burkina Faso (89th), Gabon (90th), and Cote d’Ivoire (91st).
Others are Senegal, Madagascar and Equatorial Guinea (92nd), Togo and Guinea (93rd), Niger, Mali, Comoro Islands and Chad (94th), Guinea-Bissau, Central African Republic and Algeria (95th), Egypt, Burundi and Angola (96th), Liberia and Cameroon (97th), Republic of the Congo (98th), and Djibouti (99th).
However, Nigeria was ahead of seven other Africa countries, such as Ethiopia (102nd), South Sudan (103rd), Eritrea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (104th), Sudan (106th), Libya (107th), and Somalia (111th).
The Henley Passport Index is the original, authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) – the largest, most accurate travel information database – and enhanced by Henley & Partners’ research team. Expert insights regarding the latest ranking are available in the Global Mobility Report 2021 Q3.
