The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has come out and said in strong terms that there will be a mental check for every traffic offender in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
The sector commander of the Federal Capital Territory Command of FRSC, Corp Commander Wobin Goran, described traffic offenders as “mad people”.
Goran while speaking in Abuja at the Stop At Red conference organised by Foundacion Exito Ltd/Gte said, over 7,000 motorists have been booked for emotional test and above 130 of the offenders who were asked to go for medical checks had their test result come out positive to either drugs or alcohol.
Honestly speaking what is eating deep into the bone marrow of Nigerians – both the rich and the poor – is beating traffic light at traffic light junctions,” Wobin said.
He said: “Whoever beats traffic light, I see that person as a mad man. A mad man in the sense that he is not bothered about the life of others, he is not even bothered about his own life. “
“Because when you’re beating traffic light, what that is telling me is that you are dangerous person,” the FCT sector commander said.
Decrying the fatality associating with beating traffic lights or engaging in dangerous driving, Wobin said the dangers of such acts have a ripple effect on families members of victims of road crashes, communities and the nation as a whole.
Also stating that the neglect for traffic rules by most offenders is attitudinal, Wobin said: “What baffles me is that when a Nigerian goes to the Benin Republic, Niger Republic; as soon as he steps foot in these two soils, he obeys traffic rules and regulations
But when he comes back to Nigeria, he starts misbehaving. The question is, who is going to make your country work?” Wobin asked.
Warning that the FRSC in Abuja has begun arrest of motorists who run the lights, Wobin said tickets will be issued to traffic light offenders.
He also said their vehicles will be impounded and after fines have been paid, the driver will be asked to check into a hospital for a psychological and emotional test.
