The Allen Roundabout is wearing a new look as reconstruction and remodelling of the road continue.
Ever since the Lagos State Government demolished the popular Allen Roundabout at Ikeja, traffic in this side has increased. The demolition was to pave way for the free flow of the road, the government noticed that the bottleneck at the roundabout is one of the major cause for traffic, reason why the road has to be demolished and reconstructed.
Allen Roundabout is an important junction in the city of Ikeja, it helps motorists and commuters to connect key areas like the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa; Aromire Avenue, Allen and Ikeja Under-bridge linking the popular Computer Village, it was in 2019 that the roundabout was identified as a major cause of traffic gridlock on the Awolowo Way, and therefore, recommended for remodelling.
The statues of Obafemi Awolowo, and Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a Nigerian afro-beat legend (both late) that were erected at the roundabout have been taken down to allow work commence on the site. The headless ‘Liberation’ statue of Fela, and ‘Victory’ statue of Awolowo, according to officials would be relocated elsewhere.
It will be recalled that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration last year identified 60 areas across the state where it hoped modify to allow for better traffic flow and reduce travel time.
The remodelling entails the removal of the affected roundabouts and separate streams of traffic through Traffic Signal Lights (TSL). The work will synchronise all TSLs through intelligent traffic systems which will recognise the densities of traffic streams and give priorities accordingly.
The project is estimated to last for 6 months and it been handled by Rosco Resources Ltd.
Frederic Oladeinde, the commissioner for transportation, said the idea is to reduce gridlock and increase the capacity of the roundabouts to accommodate increased vehicular traffic.
