Akeredolu Orders Indefinite Suspension Of NURTW In Ondo After Two People Died In A Clash
Following the violent clash between the factions of the Ondo State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers on Tuesday morning, the state government has announced the indefinite suspension of all activities of the union across the state.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale, also ordered the NURTW members to immediately vacate all motor parks across the state.
The government described the clash as unruly and uncultured behaviour of the union leaders which resulted in violent attacks on members and innocent citizens.
The government, however, said the indefinite suspension did not affect the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria who comported themselves in a peaceful manner.
It will be recalled that there was pandemonium at Oja Oba Area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State on Tuesday morning as members of the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers engaged in free for all.
This came barely 48 hours after the factional unionists fought at the Owode area of the state, causing injuries to many people.
On Tuesday, it was gathered that the residents and traders in the popular Oba Adesida Road had to run for their lives while the business activities were paralysed when the armed unionists attacked each other.
It was reported that the clash started around 8 a.m was bloody, with some persons matcheted and about two persons feared dead.
The witness added that the commercial drivers were armed with dangerous weapons and attacked themselves.
Vehicles were vandalised in the clash while traders, commuters as well as pedestrians scamper for safety.
